Mean Green Comeback Falls Just Short Against Houston

DENTON (1/17/04) - Despite winning the last four events in its meet against Houston on Saturday, the North Texas women’s swimming and diving team’s (5-9) late rally fell just short in a 131-107 decision against the Cougars (9-7) at the North Texas Student Recreation Center.

The Mean Green was competitive throughout, posting five first-place finishes and 12 top-two finishes. Bethany Pipes led North Texas with two event championships for the second straight meet, while Jaime Hosner and Gwen Rourke captured gold in one event each.

"I was happy with the way we swam today," said North Texas head coach Mona Nyheim-Canales. "I think we are swimming strong right now. There were some close calls and the breaks didn’t go our way at times, but we swam hard and left it in the water."

Of the six swimming events Houston won, two of them were decided by less than a second. Emilia Tudose took second place in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle, but was less than five tenths of a second off Houston’s winning time in both events.

The meet marked the final home outing of the season for North Texas, which finished with a 3-3 record at the North Texas Student Recreation Center.

The Mean Green returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 21, at SMU and will face TCU on Jan. 28 in its final meet before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, set for Feb. 12-14.
