HOUSTON, Texas -The Mean Green finished the Phill Hansel Invite Saturday, with Mona Groteguth as the top qualifier in the 200 backstroke, her second individual win of the meet and NCAA B cut this season.
"I couldn't be happier about how the ladies performed this weekend,” said head coach Brendon Bray. “With three school records and several lifetime-bests it has shown me that we are on track, at this point in our season.”
Sophomore Jana Burkard finished the last day strong with a win for the Mean Green in the 1650 freestyle. The time of 16:39.62 wasn't enough to hold off conference foe Erin Flanigan from Rice.
“We are gearing our season to one goal, to perform our best at the end of the year, and the strategies that we will use at the conference and NCAA championships, but our goal is always to just improve each time, and regardless of the results of those meets, as long as we are improving I am happy about our progress," said Bray.
The Mean Green finished in sixth, where they stood throughout the weekend, behind Rice, Idaho, University of Houston, New Mexico State, and Tulane.
“In terms of team standings we weren't entering the meet in a way to try to win the invitational, without divers entered our goal was to practice for the conference championship and focus on a small amount of events,” Bray said.
Up next for North Texas swimming and diving will head to San Diego on Jan. 10, to take on at San Diego State, Colorado State, and Tulane.
