Softball Freshman Receives Academic Honor

DENTON, Texas (7/11/12)  -- North Texas incoming freshman Amanda Edmundson was selected as a scholar-athlete by The Oklahoman/Jim Thorpe Association for 2012. As a senior on the Little Axe High School softball team, Edmundson hit .465 with 11 homers this past season and held a 3.6 grade point average.

Edmundson was an all-region and all-state selection as a senior. The infielder led the Little Axe High School softball team to state championships in 2010 and 2011. She was a four-year all-conference player and was named her team's offensive player of the year three times. Edmundson batted .505 as a junior and knocked home 38 RBI. Her team won regionals and qualified for state all four years.

Academically, she was a four-time member of the National Honor Society and was named to the Principal's Honor Roll all four years. She was a Business Professionals of America president and vice president and a student council member.

Every year, The Oklahoman and the Jim Thorpe Association celebrates high school seniors from the Oklahoma City area who best combine excellence in athletics and academics. Edmundson was named a scholar-athlete school representative. The award winners were nominated by their school and chosen by the newspaper staff.

Edmundson will join the Mean Green as a freshman for the 2012-13 school year. She joins McKinna Kinsey, Paige Kisling, Taylor Schoblocher, Madison Tierney, Bryana Wade and Karlyn Williams.
