Softball Looks For Second Win In Conference Tournament Today




Murfreesboro, TN (5/10/07) - The North Texas softball team looks for its second straight win in the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Tournament against third-seeded Troy at 3 pm today at the MT Softball Complex.

The Mean Green (22-34) knocked off No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette yesterday in the opening round of the tournament for the first time in school history. NT is now 1-16 all-time and 1-2 in the conference tournament against ULL.

North Texas faces Troy for the fourth time this season. NT is 1-2 this season against Troy and 3-5 all-time in the series. The Mean Green is 0-3 in second round conference tournament games. NT is 0-1 in tournament play against Troy. The Trojans eliminated the Mean Green from the 2006 tournament with a 9-0 victory.

The Mean Green recorded its 22nd win this season. The 22 wins ties a school record. The 2004 and 2006 teams also won 22 games. The 2007 team won 22 games in 56 games played, the quickest NT team to reach that win plateau. Susan Waters led the offense against ULL with two hits. She is second on the team behind Katya Muller with 57 hits. She is one hit shy of tying her hit total from last year. The 57 hits is sixth on NT’s single-season list. Muller leads the team with 62 hits, seven hits shy of tying her school record of 69 hits.

With her two RBI against ULL, Waters has recorded a team-leading 41 RBI. She is the first NT player to post at least 40 runs scored, 40 hits and 40 RBI in a single season. She has recorded 45 runs, 57 hits and 41 RBI. The 45 runs is a school record and the 41 RBI is second behind her own record of 53.

Kristina Fowler earned her eighth victory of the season in the win against ULL. She is now 5-3 in the circle during the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. She went 2-2 as a freshman with a loss coming at the hands of ULL. In 2006, she went 2-1 with the loss against FIU.

The Mean Green turned two double plays against ULL, increasing its season total to 34. The 34 double plays is a school record and ranked nationally. NT is second in the nation in double plays per game.

Taylor Johnston posted her second home run of the season against ULL. Her first home run came in the third game of the season against Sam Houston. The Mean Green has posted 41 home runs this season which is three shy of tying the school record for most home runs in a season. The Mean Green is ranked 80th in the nation in home runs per game (.73). 

 Susan Waters is ranked 17th in Division I softball in home runs per game (.32). She is also ranked 43rd in slugging percentage (.725).
