Mean Green Softball Loses In Seventh




Bowling Green, Ky. (5/7/06) The North Texas softball team held a three-run lead, but Western Kentucky scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal a 6-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex.

 

Western Kentucky (29-26, 8-7 Sun Belt) secured a No. 3 seed in next week’s conference tournament with the three-game sweep. North Texas (20-36, 3-12) will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will face WKU in the first game at 11 am on Thursday, May 11 in Miami.

 

Junior Heather Bostic gave North Texas a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning with a two-run homer. The first baseman posted two home runs in the three-game series against Western Kentucky, increasing her season total to four.

 

Sophomore Katya Muller hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to put North Texas on the scoreboard for the first time. WKU took an early 2-0 lead after posting a run in each of the first two innings. Muller posted two of NT’s six hits in the game, increasing her season hit total to a team-leading 62. She is four shy of Stephanie Cranmer’s single-season record set in 2004.

 

Muller knocked in one of NT’s two runs in the seventh inning with a single. Freshman Kadie Platt knocked in the first run with a double.

 

Western Kentucky scored four runs off three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal the victory. Shelby Smith won the game with a three-RBI double.

 

North Texas finishes its regular season with an overall record of 20-36. In its third year, the Mean Green softball program shattered most of its offensive records.

 

Waters doubled her home run total from her freshman year with 18 long balls this year. She is ranked in the top 10 in the nation for most home runs and holds NT’s single season and career records. She leads the team with a .320 batting average.

 

Muller is two points behind with a .318 batting average. Her bat exploded in conference play, posting 22 hits for a .393 batting average.
