No. 13 Louisiana-Lafayette Holds Mean Green Scoreless

DENTON (4/22/06) - The No. 13 Louisiana-Lafayette softball team held North Texas scoreless in both games of a doubleheader, winning by scores of 2-0 and 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Denia Park.

The Ragin’ Cajuns improved to 38-8 and 6-2 in the conference, while the Mean Green fell to 18-29 and 1-7 in the Sun Belt.

Sophomore Kristina Fowler (15-15) held Louisiana scoreless through the first four innings of the first game before allowing an unearned run in the fifth. The nation’s leading home run hitter Danyele Gomez recorded her 23rd long ball in the top of the seventh inning to tack on an insurance run. Fowler allowed one earned run off six hits in seven innings of work.

The Mean Green had its best opportunity to score in the seventh inning when Fowler started off with a double to right center field. Junior Heather Bostic followed with a single to advance Fowler to third. After Bostic moved to second on a groudout, freshman Sarah Jones hit a line drive that was snagged by the Louisiana first baseman to end the game.

Ashley Kirchberg pitched her first career no-hitter in the second game, allowing no Mean Green hits in seven innings of work. The Ragin’ Cajuns used three home runs to help out on the offensive side.

Junior Anne Morton (0-1) took the loss in the nightcap after starting the first game of her career. Except for one walk, Morton was perfect through the first three innings. Ashley Evans hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to put the Ragin’ Cajuns ahead. Freshman Jessica Smith relieved Morton and allowed two runs off four hits in 2.2 innings of work.

North Texas returns to action on Sunday, April 23 when it finishes the series with Louisiana-Lafayette. The first pitch is set for 12 pm.
