Grimes, Rupp, Kirk Named To All-Tourney Team




DENTON, Texas (2/21/12)  -- Three North Texas softball players were named to the all-tournament team at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Classic. Caitlin Grimes, Megan Rupp and Ashley Kirk all received recognition for their performances at the home tournament.

Kirk was voted tournament MVP after leading the Mean Green with a 0.00 ERA. She picked up her first win of the season in the Mean Green's 5-0 victory against Missouri State. She tied her own school record for single-game strikeouts with 14. She pitched a seven-inning shutout, allowing just three hits. Among the tournament leaders, she was tied for first with an ERA of 0.00 and third with 18 strikeouts.

Grimes jump-started the Mean Green offense in each game and led the tournament field with six RBI. She tied for fourth in the tournament with six hits. In the opening win against Northern Illinois, Grimes went 3-for-3 with four RBI. She knocked in three of the team's first four runs. She finished the tournament with a .600 batting average, a .600 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage.

Rupp went 6-for-12 in the tournament with five runs scored. She knocked in the first run against Wichita State with her first triple of the season. In the opening win against Northern Illinois, Rupp went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. She has hit safely in the last five games.

The Mean Green went 3-0 at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Classic this past weekend, improving its overall record to 4-3.
