Mean Green Softball Closes Out Play In UTSA Fastpitch Express Classic




San Antonio (2/13/05) - The North Texas softball team closed out play in the UTSA Fastpitch Express Classic on Sunday with three losses.

The Mean Green (0-5) finished the tournament with an 0-4 record with losses on Sunday to UTSA (9-0), UTEP (1-0) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-0). North Texas left 18 runners stranded on base over the four-game tournament.

Pitchers Katy Maxey (0-2) and Mandy Hacker (0-2) picked up losses against UTEP and Texas A&M-CC despite giving up a combined two runs. Maxey pitched seven shutout innings against UTEP before giving up an unearned run in the eighth inning. Hacker pitched six innings against Texas A&M-CC, allowing one run off two hits.

North Texas’ best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the seventh against UTEP with the score tied at 0-0. Sophomore Marquita Adams walked with two outs followed by junior Katie Pauley’s single to put two runners on base for the Mean Green. Freshman Katya Muller singled, but Adams was tagged out trying to reach home on the play. In the eighth inning, UTEP was able to bring home the runner placed at second, while Muller was left stranded at third in the bottom of the inning for the Mean Green.

The Mean Green and Texas A&M-CC each posted two hits in their game, but the Islanders scored with a home run in the fourth inning. Sophomore Heather Bostic tripled in the third inning, but North Texas was unable to hit her home.

Stephanie Cranmer, Danielle Rupp, Katie Pauley, Mandy Hacker, Christen Jonse and Katya Muller all posted two hits each in the tournament for North Texas.

North Texas returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 15 when it faces Texas State on the road at 3 pm.
