The North Texas Softball Preview: Catching

DENTON (2/6/08) - The North Texas softball team opens its fifth season of play on Saturday, Feb. 9 with the Quality Inn & Suites/Point Bank Invitational at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green will host Creighton on Saturday at 3 pm in its season opener.

Catching
Head coach TJ Hubbard thinks this is his most talented group of catchers, armed with athleticism and experience. All four catchers will be given the opportunity to prove themselves in 2008.

Kyleigh Callender and Rebecca Waters each have a year of experience at North Texas behind them, while Taylor Johnston has served as a utility player the last three years and will see time behind the plate this year.

Callender joined the team last year as a transfer from Navarro College. As a junior, Callender saw action in 25 games. She started 17 games at catcher, including the season opener against Colorado State.

Johnston saw action last year in the outfield and at designated player, but will see more time behind the plate this year. She can play numerous positions and run the bases.

Waters is the team’s most versatile player and she could see time at a couple of different positions.  Last year, Waters saw time at second and first, in addition to catching.  This year Hubbard looks for her to share responsibilities between catching and third base.

Freshman Courtney Bradshaw adds to the mix at the catcher position, coming from Mineola, TX. She has adjusted well to the college game in both her catching and hitting abilities.  According to Hubbard, she showed great patience and selectivity at the plate and Hubbard likes what he sees offensively from her.
