DENTON, Texas – North Texas softball’s 11-game win streak ended in the first day of the Best Western/Courtyard Classic with a tight 5-4 defeat at the hands of Wichita State followed by an extra-innings loss to (RV) McNeese State, 5-2.

“I don’t think we played well enough to win today,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “Offensively, we have got to do a better job with at bats. I think on the defensive side, our lack of execution cost us, and for us, that is very disappointing because we worked extremely hard on that side of the ball in practice.”

NT went back and forth with Wichita State until, in the top of the 7th inning when the Mean Green needed one run to tie, senior Jordan Terry sent a fly ball to the warning track with two outs and two on.

In the second match of the afternoon, the Mean Green faced a McNeese squad that had already knocked off three top-25 units this season.

Senior ace pitcher Ashley Kirk dominated throughout the game, giving up a mere four hits and one earned run in eight innings of work.

But it was the North Texas bats that could not get it going in extra innings following a four-run top of the eighth by the Cowgirls.

“We need to step up,” coach Kee concluded. “We have to do a better job with our mindset, not play scared and play like we know how.”

North Texas, pending inclement weather, will continue play in the Best Western/Courtyard Classic on Sunday, March 2, against McNeese State at 11:30 a.m.
