DENTON, Texas - In a monster offensive performance, the Mean Green set the single-game program record with 18 runs in an 18-0 blowout of Prairie View A&M on the second day of the Texas Shootout.
With the win, NT remained unbeaten at home (8-0) and extended its winning streak to nine, a program-best mark.
"When you looked at the hits, most of them were extra-base hits so you could tell we swung it aggressively and hard," head coach Tracey Kee said.
North Texas, which has scored the majority of its runs this season in the first few innings, started off with a Dani Hoff two-run home run in the bottom of the first followed by a Kat Strunk three-run double off of the wall. Strunk would finish the game with a team-high five RBI on two hits.
"I had been in a slump, and coach Kee gave me a lot of confidence before the game in batting practice which really helped me," Strunk said.
In a performance that was overshadowed by the record amount of runs scored, junior starting pitcher Madison Thompson recorded the second win of her season, pitching a complete-game shutout and only allowing three hits.
"Kudos to the team for getting out there and getting us runs," Thompson said. "It just helps you have more confidence on the mound, and it is just awesome to come out and shut somebody down."
In the end, North Texas put together its most complete game in the Kee era, dominating the ball game in every phase.
"Tonight's whole game was about trying to finish stronger than yesterday, and I felt a lot better leaving the field today than I did yesterday," coach Kee concluded.
NT continues play in the Texas Shootout on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Lovelace Stadium against Stephen F. Austin. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. and is subject to change.
