Offensive Explosion Makes For Exciting Day Two

DENTON -- After a relatively quiet day one, the fans attending the North Texas Invitational were in for quite a treat on day two. Overnight the bats shed their rust, leading to an offensive explosion. Early in the day, North Texas was on the kind side of the runs-fest.

Playing as the visiting team due to tournament rules, the Mean Green jumped on Boise State from the get-go, batting all the way around the order before even recording the second out of the inning. Three walks, six singles and a Taylor Schoblocher three-run bomb later, North Texas held a commanding 12-0 advantage heading into the defensive half.

Schoblocher's day was only getting started. She also launched a solo shot long over the wall in the third inning. Sophomore Kelli Schkade would seal things up with an RBI double in the fourth as North Texas coasted to a 14-4 run rule victory in five innings.

I repeat: Schoblocher's day was only getting started. In a wild finale of day two of the North Texas invitational, the Mean Green looked to avenge the season opening loss to Seton Hall just a day ago.

Trailing 5-0 after the opening frame, North Texas attempted to claw its way back into things led by the bat of Schoblocher. The leftfielder continued her incredible offensive tear by blasting two more home runs, and just missing a third that was caught by the right fielder on the warning track. Schoblocher has put others on notice, through three games she has recorded eight hits on 11 at-bats with six home runs and 11 RBIS. One would think she might be an early candidate for the conference's player of the week award, considering she had five home runs all of last season.

Unfortunately for North Texas, the stellar performance would be overshadowed by a poor pitching outing. The Pirates took advantage and flexed their own power, launching eight home runs and 14 hits en route to a 17-6 run rule win after six innings, sending North Texas to 2-2 on the season.

Next Up:

  • North Texas will look to repeat its performance against Boise State today when it takes on the Broncos tomorrow in the tournament finale. The stage is set conveniently, as the winner of tomorrow's game will take second in the 2015 North Texas Invitational. First pitch is tentatively set for 11AM CT.
