DENTON -- Sophomore North Texas men's golfer Michael Cotton earned a spot on the Conference USA men's golf All-Academic team announced Friday.

Cotton had a stellar sophomore season with the fourth lowest stroke average at 73.83 and played in all 10 tournaments. The Katy native had a 3.87 GPA in finance to earn his first-ever All-Academic team honor.

In those 10 tournaments, Cotton has four top-15 finishes and shot a career-best 67 in the first round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic. Cotton finished inside the top 10 in seventh place with a three-round season low score of 215. He shot par or better seven times this season and fired three rounds in the 60s. Last season, Cotton made the C-USA All-Freshman team and became the third North Texas golfer to win the Texas State Amateur Championship.

All six academic team members and 59 other individuals are scheduled to represent their teams at the 2016 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship April 24-27 at Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Arkansas. Thirteen teams will compete in a three-day, 54-hole championship to determine the individual medalist. The top four teams will then be seeded for a match play playoff with the semifinals and championship to be conducted on the fourth day. The winning team gains the league's automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Men's Golf Championship Regionals.
