THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Junior Curtis Donahoe turned in a career performance and the No.32 North Texas men's golf team had its best tournament of the year finishing in second place with a score of 22-under par at The Woodlands All-American Intercollegiate.
Donahoe finished in second place at 9-under par and the Mean Green ended just one stroke behind the tournament champion, No. 10 Arkansas. North Texas shot a score of 22-under par, 842, which is the second lowest tournament score since 1998.
Donahoe's three-round score of 9-under par 207 is the best score on a par-72 for a Mean Green golfer since Les Phillips and Michael Pruitt shot a 207 at the Pacific Invitational in 1998. North Texas knocked off two top-20 teams, beating No. 14 Texas A&M by three strokes and crushing No. 19 Clemson by 21 shots. The Mean Green also defeated No. 44 SMU by 15 and No. 27 Baylor by 19 shots.
It is the fifth and sixth victories of the year over top-25 teams for North Texas. All five golfers for North Texas finished in the top-25.
Donahoe shot a final round of 69 and had 11 birdies but only two bogeys in 54 holes of play. The 207 is a career-low score for Donahoe.
Ty Spinella had his second straight top-10 finish as he shot a third round of 1-under par 71 to finish in a tie for seventh place. Spinella's final round featured three birdies but also an eagle on the par-5 15th hole that put him back to under-par for the round. Spinella finished the tournament at 4-under par 212.
Freshman Jason Roets had his best tournament of the spring finishing in a tie for 20th place at 1-under par 215. Roets was 3-under par on his final round after seven holes, but a double bogey on the eighth hole and a bogey on No. 17 put him at even-par for the day.
Carlos Ortiz shot 2-under par in the third round and was even-par for the tournament at 216. Ortiz finished in a tie for 23rd. Rodolfo Cazaubon was tied for 25th after firing a 75 in the final round. Cazaubon's round came undone with a triple bogey on the ninth hole, but he managed two birdies on the final four holes.
North Texas has now finished in the top-5 in seven straight tournaments and nine of the 10 tournaments this season. The Mean Green now turns its attention to the Sun Belt Conference Championship on April 23-25 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. North Texas is seeking its first conference title since 2003, after finishing in a tie for second place last season.
