Freshman Rubio Leads NT In Final Round

STATESBORO, Ga. - True freshman Gonzalo Rubio, playing in just his fourth tournament of the year, led the No. 25 North Texas golf team in the final round of the Schenkel Invitational. Rubio posted a final round of even-par 72 and had the lowest three round score for North Texas at 6-over par 222.

Despite the effort of Rubio, North Texas as a team shot a third-round of 302, its highest for the tournament. The Mean Green dropped to 12th place with a score of 892.

Rubio, who had just three birdies in his previous two rounds, had five birdies on the final round and ended in a tie for 30th place.

Carlos Ortiz finished just one stroke behind Rubio but had a third round of 78. Ortiz was only 1-over par after the first nine holes, but he played the final nine holes at 5-over par to finish in a tie for 36th place.

Jason Roets, who had been the low score for North Texas the first two rounds, had a difficult third round as he posted an 82. Roets struggled right out of the gate with a double bogey and never was able to get on track. He fell into a tie for 46th place.

Rodolfo Cazaubon shot a third round of 75. He was 1-under after the front nine, but a quintuple bogey on the par-3 seventh hole dropped him from even-par to 4-over.

Curtis Donahoe shot a final round of 5-over par 77 on the day. No. 4 Alabama pulled away from the field to win the team title by 10 strokes over No. 6 Texas.

The Mean Green has a few weeks off before returning to the course as they play at the Aggie Invitational on April 6-7.
