DENTON, Texas – While the attention of the golf world was on Augusta this weekend, former North Texas golfer Carlos Ortiz is making waves of his own as he captured his second Web.com title by winning the El Bosque Mexican Championship. Ortiz is the first Mexican native to win the event and with the victory, his second of the year, Ortiz moved to No. 1 on the money list with $304,458 through only six events.
The first place prize money was worth 126,000 dollars for Ortiz. He won by shooting a 4-under par 68 in the final round to post a 13-under par score to win by two shots.
“It feels great, I was really shaky at the end with bogeys on 16 and 17, but managed to hit it on the green in two on 18 and that’s when I knew I had it,” said Ortiz. “To be able to win in Mexico, it just feels great. I’ve been working really hard and I want to get that third win so I can jump to the PGA Tour.”
Ortiz, who captured the Panama Claro Championship earlier in the year, is one win away from a three-victory promotion and earning his PGA Tour card. The last player to accomplish that on the Web.com Tour was Michael Sim in 2009. He is only player on the Web.com Tour with two victories this season.
Ortiz is all but assured a 2014-15 PGA Tour card, but his next win guarantees his status on the tour for next season.
