DENTON (12/6/06) North Texas placed six players on the 2006 Sun Belt All-Conference football team, the league announced today. Senior wide receiver Johnny Quinn and senior offensive lineman Dylan Lineberry earned first-team honors, while junior defensive end Jeremiah Chapman and sophomore punter Truman Spencer were second-team members. Linebacker Maurice Holman and safety Aaron Weathers were honorable mention selections.
Lineberry, who earned first-team honors for the second straight year, graded out as the team’s top offensive lineman in all 12 games. He was listed as a preseason candidate for both the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award which award the nation’s top offensive linemen each year. Quinn will leave North Texas as the school’s all-time leading receiver after breaking the record for both career receptions and career receiving yards this season. He led the Mean Green in receiving all four years and finished the year with the third-longest active reception streak in the nation with 47 consecutive games with at least one catch.
Chapman was named to the second team for the second straight year. He led North Texas and ranked fifth in the Sun Belt with five quarterback sacks. He also led the Mean Green in tackles for loss and quarterback hurries. Spencer finished the season with the Sun Belt’s second highest punting average at 40.8 yards per attempt. His average was also the sixth-best in Sun Belt history and he led the league in punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
Weathers led the team in tackles for the second straight year. His 78 stops ranked him fifth in the Sun Belt and third among all defensive backs. Holman was second on the team with 74 tackles and is making his second straight appearance on the honorable mention list.
Troy quarterback Omar Haugabook was both the Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Trojans to their first Sun Belt Conference championship and New Orleans Bowl appearance. Linebacker Keyonvis Bouie of Florida International was the Defensive Player of the Year while Rick Stockstill of Middle Tennessee was the Coach of the Year. Haugabook was the Newcomer of the Year and Reggie Arnold of Arkansas State was the Freshman of the Year.
