Football Travels To Arkansas State This Weekend

DENTON (10/19/06) - The North Texas football team continues Sun Belt Conference action at Arkansas State after a bye week. The game will be televised on ESPN Regional and can be seen on KFWD Channel 52 in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The radio call can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT.

North Texas improved to 1-1 in Sun Belt play with the seven-overtime win over Florida International Oct. 7. The game tied an NCAA record for number of overtimes played. Arkansas State features the Sun Belt’s leading defense and one of its top rushing attacks. Reggie Arnold accounts for 87 rushing yards per game while the Indian defense has held its opponents to 285 total yards.

Darrell Dickey, the four time Sun Belt Coach of the Year, suffered a mild heart attack last week and is under daily consultation with his doctors. A timeline for his return has not been set. Assistant coach Kenny Evans, in his ninth year with the program, will fill in for Dickey on an interim basis. Steve Roberts, in his fourth season at Arkansas State, has already brought a Sun Belt title to Jonesboro. Roberts led the Indians to the 2005 New Orleans Bowl, the program’s first bowl since the 1969 Pecan Bowl.

North Texas leads the all-time series 8-7, taking four of the last five meetings. Arkansas State won the first three games beginning in 1985, and also won last season’s matchup 31-24 at Fouts Field. ASU leads the series at Indian Stadium, 4-3.
