Former Quarterback Phillips Joining Athletic Department Staff

DENTON, Texas (7/4/09) - After years quarterbacking the Mean Green football team, Matt Phillips is turning in his cleats for wingtips as North Texas' new Director of Sales.

A four-year letterman for North Texas from 2005-08, Phillips hit the ground running Monday morning and will assist Hank Dickenson with the athletic department's sales and partnership efforts.

Phillips threw for 791 yards on 64-of-132 (48.5 percent) passing in his four years for the Mean Green. The General Studies graduate even started three games at QB, including the season opener at Texas in 2006.

He spent the past seven months in an internship with the Greater Denton Sports Commission. There he helped plan a 5K, a golf tournament, and a sports banquet among other major events for the organization.

The San Angelo, Texas, native finished his career with a 101.2 efficiency rating, and was the squad's primary placeholder in each of the last two seasons.

In high school, Phillips was named the All-West Texas Super Team MVP by the San Angelo Standard-Times after throwing for 1,950 yards as a senior. He even led the Lakeview Chiefs to a share of the District 4-4A title en route to Offensive MVP honors.
