Bobo And Wali Lead North Texas To 72-41 Victory




DENTON (12/8/04) - Junior Erika Bobo and sophomore Didi Wali scored 13 points each to help North Texas cruise to a 72-41 victory against Hampton on Wednesday night in the Super Pit.

The Mean Green improved its record to 3-3, while the Lady Pirates dropped to 2-4 on the season. North Texas is 2-0 at home for the first time since the 2001-02 season.

Bobo led the surge with her first career double-double and recorded her fifth straight game in double figures. Along with her 13 points, she pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Wali’s 13 points was a personal best, including 6-for-8 shooting from the free throw line. North Texas had its largest offensive output of the year with season highs in field-goal percentage (42.9), field goals made (27) and total points.

On the defensive end of the court, the Mean Green held Hampton to an opponent’s season low of 41 points, 10 field goals and 18 percent shooting from the field. The 41 points is fewest allowed as a team since the 2002 season.

Mia Ajekwu connected on the first basket of the game and the Mean Green never looked back. North Texas shot 53 percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes of play to jump ahead, 20-5. Eight different players contributed to the scoring in the run with three-pointers by Mian Williams, Natalie Mireles and Bobo. The Mean Green defense held the Lady Pirates to just one point in a span of over seven minutes from 16:52 to 9:07. Williams led all scorers at halftime with 10 points as the Mean Green scored a season-best 43 points by the break.

The Mean Green outscored the Lady Pirates, 29-23, in the second half to seal the win. North Texas led by as many as 33 points, 72-39, after a Wali free throw with 2:34 left in the game.

North Texas continues its homestand on Saturday, Dec. 11 when it faces Louisiana-Monroe at 7 pm in the Super Pit.
