Mean Green Defeats SMU, 84-69




DENTON (12/3/05) Five Mean Green players scored in double figures to lead the North Texas women’s basketball team to an 84-69 victory against SMU on Saturday night at the Super Pit.

 

The Mean Green (5-1) defeated the Mustangs for the first time in three years. The last Mean Green win over SMU was a 72-53 victory in 2001 at the Super Pit. SMU (3-4) still leads the series, 23-13.

 

Senior Erika Bobo posted her fifth career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She also led the team in steals with six. The Mean Green forced 25 SMU turnovers and held the edge in steals, 13-9.

 

Redshirt freshman Amber Jackson posted her third straight game in double figures with 14 points. Eight of the 14 points came in the second half. Junior Mia Ajekwu posted her third career double-double and her second against the Mustangs. She posted 11 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

 

After a layup by Ajekwu tied the game at 46-46 at the start of the second half, North Texas went on a 13-2 run and never looked back. SMU cut the lead to nine points several times, but the Mean Green defense never let the Mustangs get any closer. Jackson gave North Texas its largest lead, 82-64, with a jumper at 3:22.

 

Erica Howard led the bench with 13 points. The North Texas bench scored 39 points in the game. The Mean Green held the edge in rebounds, 48-37. In all five victories, the Mean Green has recorded at least 43 rebounds or more.

 

North Texas continues its homestand on Thursday, Dec. 8 when it faces UT-Pan American at 7 pm in the Super Pit.
