Miners Too Much For The Mean Green In 77-43 Win

EL PASO, Tex. (12/2/06) The North Texas women’s basketball team began its nine-game road trip against a red-hot team from UTEP and fell 77-43 from the Don Haskins Center. UTEP (6-1) trailed only once in the game, 3-2, but never looked back once they gained the lead.

The Mean Green (2-4) could not overcome the loss of sophomore Sanetra Jackson who left the game with an ankle injury after knocking down a 3-pointer 30 seconds into game.

“It was tough out there for us especially when Sanetra went down but we can play a lot better than that which is the disappointing part,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker.

Following Jackson’s injury, UTEP went on a 12-1 run to open a 14-4 lead. The Mean Green cut the Miner lead to 16-10, but UTEP extended it once again with a 13-2 run to make it 29-12 with six minutes left in the first half.

North Texas trailed by 15 at the break, 39-24 when UTEP blew the game open for good in the second half. Izabela Piekarska came out sizzling with 10 points in the first six minutes to power the Miners on a 14-2 run to make it 53-26.

North Texas could not get any closer as UTEP clamped down on the Mean Green offensively limiting them to just five second half field goals.

Talicia Sanders had 12 points for the Mean Green and Tricia Lee tied a career-high with 11 points on the afternoon.

North Texas continues its nine-game road on Thursday, December 7 at Stephen F. Austin.
