TUCSON, Arizona - The North Texas (4-2) women's basketball team put on a furious rally but came up just short as the Arizona Wildcats (5-0) held on to win 69-62 at the McKale Center. Tamara Torru's five 3-pointers fueled the Mean Green's rally as they trailed by 22 points midway through the second half.
North Texas went on an 11-0 run late in the second half to cut the Arizona lead to 64-59 with 2:48 remaining in the game. Trailing 64-59, Brittney Hudson missed two technical free throw shots and North Texas couldn't score on the subsequent possession.
Arizona was able to stretch their lead to eight points at 67-59 on free throws. The Mean Green cut into the lead one final time to make it 67-61 with 1:36 left, but a layup by Davellyn Whyte with 39 seconds iced the game for Arizona.
Torru's ended the game with a career-high 26 points and her second double-double on the season with 12 rebounds. It was the most 3-pointers in a game for a player since 2008 for North Texas.
Arizona jumped on North Texas in the early going, using a 17-3 run to lead 20-9 with 11:32 left in the first half. North Texas battled back and cut the Wildcats lead to six points at 27-21, but Arizona pushed the lead back up to 11 points at the break at 37-26.
North Texas scored the first five points of the second half to make it a six-point game again, until Arizona went on a 20-4 run to open up a 22-point lead at 57-35 with 10:28 before North Texas began its rally.
North Texas is back in action on Friday night in the opening round of the Gene Hackerman Invitational as they face Oregon State.
