Lady Eagles Sign San Antonio Taft Point Guard

(4/10/02) - The North Texas women’s basketball team signed Natalie Mireles, a 5-6 point guard out of San Antonio Taft High School, to a national scholarship letter of intent agreement on Wednesday.

Mireles led her team to a 35-4 record and to the state semifinals her senior season. She averaged 12.1 points, 6.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds and five steals per game her senior campaign. The second team All-State selection also shot 52 percent from beyond the arch, hit 74 percent of her free throws and made 51 percent of her shots from the field during her senior season.

"I like that Natalie led her team to the finals of the state tournament," said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. "I think that you look for leadership in a point guard. She is a great passer, distributes the ball well and she can score."

The Lady Raiders piled up a 122-19 record during Mireles’ four years on the varsity squad and went to the playoffs each season. The team advanced to the regional finals her freshman and junior seasons with records of 28-6 and 30-4, respectively. Mireles’ sophomore season, the Lady Raiders produced a 29-5 record and made it to the regional quarterfinals.

"Natalie is definitely a true point guard," said San Antonio Taft head coach Pam Owens. "She started for me since the fifth game of her freshman year and we’ve been very successful simply because of her. She can handle the ball left to right and can read the defense. She knows where the ball needs to go and is a heck of a passer, but if they’re sagging off her she can definitely shoot the ball."
