DENTON (2/27/07) - The North Texas women's basketball team begins its run in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday at South Alabama. The game tips at 7 p.m. from the Mitchell Center and can be heard on KNTU 88.1 FM. North Texas is the No. 9 seed while South Alabama is the No. 8 seed. The Mean Green lost the only meeting of the season with the Jaguars on the road 72-57.
North Texas enters the game having won two of its past three games while South Alabama has won two of its past three games. The winner will advance to the Sun Belt Conference quarterfinals to face No. 1 seed Middle Tennessee.
North Texas has dominated South Alabama through the years holding a series lead of 11-3. South Alabama won the first and only meeting of the season this year 72-57 in Mobile to end a four-game North Texas winning streak in the series. On the road at the Mitchell Center North Texas has a record of 5-2.
The games in Mobile throughout the years have been close as five of the seven games have been decided by 10 points or less. Three of those seven have been decided by three points or less. North Texas is 3-0 in the games decided by three points or less at the Mitchell Center.
The Mean Green begins its run to the Sun Belt Tournament against South Alabama. The Mean Green is 4-6 all-time in the SBC Tournament.
North Texas has lost its last three straight opening games in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and last four overall. Not since the 2003 SBC Tournament has North Texas won a tournament game. The Mean Green has advanced or played into the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in four of the six seasons.
The 2005 season the Mean Green earned a bye into the quarterfinals. The Mean Green’s best run in the SBC Tournament since joining the league in 2000 came during the 2001-02 season. That year North Texas advanced to the championship game before falling to FIU.
