Women Drop Heartbreaker to ASU 62-59




DENTON, Texas - North Texas women's basketball dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Arkansas State Saturday evening as the Red Wolves prevailed 62-59.

The Mean Green (5-16, 2-6) jumped out to a huge lead early thanks to a 21-5 run that encompassed the first 10:35 of the game.

However, the Red Wolves (11-10, 4-4) responded with a run of their own and bringing the game to within five by halftime, when they trailed North Texas 28-23.

The second half was much like the first, with each team assembling scoring runs.

Arkansas State started the second half, much like they ended the first, although this time it was a 21-4 run to overcome the Mean Green lead and then build their out to 44-32.

North Texas, led by 10 points from Denetra Kellum in the span of 7:31, mounted another 21-5 run to gain a five point lead at 53-49 with 2:59 left on the clock.

From there, Arkansas State's Jasmie Taylor took over for the Red Wolves and tied the game at 57-57 with eight seconds to play, sending the game into overtime.

Arkansas State would the score five of the seven points in the extra frame and send the Mean Green to it's second straight loss.

Sophomore Jasmine Godbolt led all scorers for the Mean Green with 21 points, while collecting 10 rebounds.

Kellum added 14 points while senior Tamara Torru hauled in 14 rebounds.

Sania Hurst and Sherina Scoot led the Red Wolves with 15 points each on a combined 10-of-32 shooting.

North Texas women's basketball will be back in action Wednesday when it travels to Louisiana-Lafayette to take on the Ragin' Cajuns. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
