Mean Green Pick Up 59-43 Victory Over The Islanders

DENTON (1/2/04)- The North Texas women's basketball team closed out non-conference action and ended their seven-game losing streak with a 59-43 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-6) at the Super Pit. The Mean Green (4-8) had four players score in double figures led by sophomore forward Jamie Armstrong's 14 points.

North Texas led from the onset of the game and never trailed. The Mean Green defense was stifling for most of the night as they held the Islanders to their lowest point total and field goal percentage of the season.

Armstrong powered North Texas early in the first half with 10 points as the Mean Green took a 29-21 lead into the break. North Texas opened the second half with a 13-2 run over the first four minutes to pull away from Texas A&M-Corpus Christ. Jill Medlock and Kim Blanton both had 10 points on the night and Medlock extended her school record free throw streak to 37 with two makes on the evening.

Freshman Kelsie Edwards also added 10 points off the bench for North Texas as was a perfect on the night hitting all four of her shots and two free throws. The Mean Green shot 45 percent from the floor on the night, the second best percentage of the season.

North Texas will enjoy eight days off before beginning Sun Belt play with three straight road games starting at New Mexico State on January 10.
