DENTON, Texas – North Texas women’s basketball head coach Mike Petersen announced today the signing of three players to national letters of intent. The Mean Green added three high school products on the second day of the 2013-14 early signing period: Jaileen Thomas, Bria Frierson and Megan Womack.
Thomas and Frierson, both local products, rank 21st and 39th, respectively, in Texas according to Premier Basketball Report, respectively.
“We are happy with this group,” Petersen said. “It addressed some specific needs with regards to signing a point guard. We are going to lose a point guard after this year in Laura McCoy, and we always want to have two on our roster. With Candice Adams and Jaileen, we will have two young points moving forward.
“We wanted to add a couple of good athletes that can play on the interior and with Bria and Megan, we did just that. We also like the fact that we signed a couple of Dallas/Fort Worth kids, and we know this is an area with great players and great talent. Therefore, we want to be heavily involved in this area and make sure they know North Texas is a first-choice option for them.”
Jaileen Thomas, 5-6, Point Guard, Richardson, TX (Berkner High School)
Thomas is ranked 21st in Texas by the Premier Basketball Report. She led the Dallas/Fort Worth area in scoring last season with 26.3 points per game. She also averaged 4.5 boards per game in her junior season, and was the 9-5A MVP of the district. She is a three-time first-team All-District selection as well.
“She is a point guard that can really score," Petersen said. "She’s a very good three-point shooter that can play downhill and get into lane to score or distribute the ball. We are excited about her ability to play at the tempo that we like. She’s got a really nice point guard skill set that we think can help us in the future.”
Bria Frierson, 6-0, Forward, McKinney, TX (Liberty High School)
Frierson is ranked 39th in Texas by the Premier Basketball Report. She was named the Defensive MVP of her district following her sophomore campaign and was named first team all-district her junior season. She also earned All-Region honors.
“In Bria, we have a great athlete that plays unbelievably hard," Petersen said. "She possesses great position versatility, and she can also guard a lot of different positions. She can score from 17 feet, and, in addition to her range, she has a great face up game that allows her to attack the rim off of the dribble.”
Megan Womack, 6-3, Forward, Stroud, OK (Stroud High School)
Womack was a two-time all-conference selection for Stroud High School her sophomore and junior seasons. She was also named the team MVP her last two seasons.
“She is a very strong and physical interior player that can play the four or the five for us," Petersen said. "She is a great rebounder and defender, and she can score around the rim extremely well. On top of that, she can hit a jumper for you. She has a tremendous work ethic and a high motor, and will play really hard all the time.”
