Dawkins Scores 15 Points In Mean Green Win
BreAnna Dawkins hit two key jumpers in the final minutes of the game to lead the North Texas women's basketball team to a 53-48 victory against Rice.

HOUSTON -- Through 18 games, there is no hiding that the North Texas women's basketball team is 2-16. But on the bright side, the Mean Green will look to bump its record to 2-0 against intrastate rival Rice when the team travels to Houston for 2 p.m. tip February 1 against the Owls on Super Bowl Sunday.

In the first matchup between the two this season, North Texas held on for a 53-48 victory over Rice. After going scoreless in the first half, senior guard BreAnna Dawkins scored 15 points in the second half to lead the Mean Green to victory. Meanwhile, senior forward Briesha Wynn had a fantastic all-around performance with 12 points, nine rebounds and seven steals.

Since that game, however, both North Texas and Rice are winless in Conference USA play; the Owls are 6-12 overall with a 1-6 C-USA record. As it stands now, the two teams are tied for 12th in the conference standings, and with the fact that the bottom two teams in the league do not make the Conference USA Tournament field from March 11-14, this game could decide who qualifies and who gets left behind.

A crucial area of focus in this game will be on the glass. In C-USA play, Rice ranks second overall at 42.4 rebounds per game, while North Texas is 13th overall at 33.9 rebounds per game. The Owls are led on the boards by senior center Christal Porter, who averages 10.4 rebounds per game overall on the season and nine per game during C-USA play. Even though the Mean Green won the first matchup, they lost the rebounding battle 46-33.

In North Texas' loss January 24 at Southern Miss, the front court duo of senior Joh'Vonna Darrington (12) and redshirt sophomore Eboniey Jeter (11) became the first pair of Mean Green players this season to grab double-digit rebounds in the same game. Even though the visitors were out-rebounded 38-36 overall by the Golden Eagles, the team would be happy with the same effort down low against Rice.

For those who are unable to make it to Tudor Fieldhouse, the game will be televised on American Sports Network. You can find local listing information via the link at the top of the article.
