Men's Basketball Returns To The Super PIt Tonight

DENTON (11/21/06) - Rebounding well after the loss to UT-Arlington, North Texas knocked off Conference USA opponent Rice on the road 71-69 on Saturday. The Mean Green looks to keep the momentum going tonight against another CUSA foe, Tulsa. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CST from The Super Pit.

The Mean Green, which posted its best home record in 30 years (11-4) last season, looks for its second home victory against the Golden Hurricane. The Mean Green, 3-1, is off to one of the best starts in school history as only four other squads have matched this start in the last 25 years. NT is getting it done with lights-out shooting, knocking down 48.4 percent of its attempts from the floor.

A familiar opponent, Tulsa leads the all-time series 35-13 over North Texas. However, the Mean Green got in the last shot, topping the Golden Hurricane 67-61 last season at the Reynolds Center. The fledgling programs began playing each other in 1922 by splitting a pair in Denton.

The Mean Green, which is shooting over 44 percent from beyond the arc in 2006-07, is carrying on a tradition when it comes to three pointers at North Texas. NT has hit at least one three pointer in every game dating through the 1988-89 season (506 games).Calvin Watson is one of the biggest reasons for North Texas’ three-point success since his arrival in Denton. The senior has nailed at least one three pointer in 11 straight games, and ranks seventh all-time in school history in three pointers made. At this pace, Watson is set to take over the all-time lead before the season ends. Named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt squad, Watson ranks second on the team in scoring at 15.8 ppg.
