Freshman White Named Sun Belt Player of the Week

DENTON, Texas (11/20/07) - Freshman Josh White was carried off the court by his teammates and fans in only his second collegiate game, and earned the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week after engineering North Texas’ 82-73 win over Oklahoma State.

White dropped in 25 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists to give the Mean Green its first ever win against the Cowboys. Clutch when it counted, the freshman was 6-6 on free throws in the game’s final 44 seconds despite shattering his two front teeth in the first half.

White has reached double figures in all three games so far this season, leading NT with 16.7 points per contest. He managed an 11 point outing in the win over Indiana State on Saturday, and has yet to miss a free throw in 12 attempts this year. White’s 54.8 field goal percentage ranks second on the team and he is also tied for the team lead with four steals.

North Texas returns to action tomorrow at Metroplex rival UT Arlington. Tip time is schedule for 7:00 p.m.

What To Watch For Against The Mavericks

North Texas will be looking for a measure of revenge against the Mavericks, which knocked off the Mean Green 83-81 on a buzzer-beating shot last year. Five players in double-figures paced UTA, led by big man Jermaine Griffin who hit the game-winning shot at the horn. UTA returns all five starters from that team.

North Texas head coach Johnny Jones reached a .500 career win percentage with the victory over Indiana State. Jones evened his record at 89-89, which ranks sixth all-time among North Texas’ 16 head coaches. Only one other coach since 1933 has managed a winning record at NT.

Forward Quincy Williams hauled in 19 rebounds against the Sycamores, which ties for the 13th most in school history. The most rebounds by a player in the Sun Belt Conference this season, Williams’ tally is the best by an NT player since Shawnson Johnson’s 21 versus UNO in 2006.
