Basketball Opens Season Tonight With Doubleheader




DENTON (11/18/05) - Both the men's and women's basketball teams open their 2005-06 seasons tonight at home, starting at 5 pm with the women taking on Stephen F. Austin. The Mean Green men will host Hardin-Simmons at 7 p.m. in the second game of the doubleheader with the North Texas women’s basketball team. Every North Texas game can be heard live on KWRD (100.7 FM) in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The North Texas men’s basketball program is entering its 88th season in 2005-06, owning a 916-1101 all-time record. Johnny Jones was named North Texas’ 16th head coach on April 16, 2001, and is set for his fifth season with the Mean Green. North Texas, which is 9-0 in exhibition games under Jones, won its only preseason game of the year with a 73-50 victory over Abilene Christian last Friday.

The North Texas women begins the 2005-06 season with a matchup against an old Southland Conference rival, Stephen F. Austin. The Mean Green enters the year having split their two exhibition games. The Mean Green has won three straight season openers.

Tina Slinker is in her 17th year of coaching with an overall record of 199-240. Slinker has the most win’s in North Texas women’s basketball history and the second most wins among active coaches in the Sun Belt Conference. Slinker is 0-4 in her career against Stephen F. Austin. The Ladyjacks are led by head coach Lee Ann Riley. She is starting fifth year at Stephen F. Austin. Riley has a record of 60-54 at Stephen F. Austin and and overall record of 91-112.
