Mitchell Named Wooden Award Top 50 Player

OMAHA, Neb. - The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced its Preseason Top 50 today on ESPN.com, and North Texas forward Tony Mitchell was among the honorees.

Mitchell, who was also named to the ESPN Preseason All-America Second Team on Thursday, was one of just two freshmen to average a double-double last season (joining Kentucky’s Anthony Davis) as he led the Sun Belt Conference in points, rebounds, 3-point field goal percentage and block in league play.

Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball media members, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early front-runners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor – the John R. Wooden Award.

The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation’s top 10 players, will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament.

North Texas opens the 2012-13 season at No. 16/15 Creighton on Friday at 7 p.m. The game is being webcasted on MeanGreenSports.com ($10.95 for 1 month pass) and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network (95.3-FM and 88.1-FM in DFW).
