Chuck Taylor Joins Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

DENTON (9/15/06) North Texas head basketball coach Johnny Jones has named former Richland (Texas) Junior College coach Chuck Taylor to the Mean Green coaching staff.

Taylor, a graduate of Wayne State University in Michigan, joins the North Texas staff after piling compiling a 24-8 record at Richland last season, leading the Thunderducks to the Metro Conference Championship.

“We are excited to have coach Taylor join the staff,” said North Texas head coach Johnny Jones. “I think he brings a great deal of energy, and with his ability to recruit and his on the floor coaching abilities, I think he will help keep the program going in the right direction.”

Taylor’s Richland squad finished the year ranked third in the NJCAA Division III national rankings after racking up a 9-1 conference record.

Prior to Richland, Taylor served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M Corpus Christi from 2002-2005. Coaching under Ronnie Arrow, who won three junior college national titles while at San Jacinto (Texas) College, Taylor helped lead the Islanders some of the best seasons in school history. The Islanders racked up a 20-8 record, the best of any independent in the nation, and wins over Old Dominion, Baylor, TCU and Florida State.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to work for coach Jones and the North Texas staff,” said Taylor. “I think this is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family, and I look forward to helping coach Jones elevate the Mean Green to the next level.”

Taylor spent the 2001-02 season coaching under another junior college national champion, fellow North Texas assistant coach Bill Foy. The pair will once again join forces to help lead the Mean Green in 2006-07.

Taylor earned his degree from Wayne State in 2002.
