Mitchell, USA Hoops Bounced By Russians

RIGA, Latvia - The U19 USA Basketball team's dream of a gold medal was dashed at the FIBA World Championships by Russia on Friday morning in a 79-74 quarterfinal loss.

North Texas freshman Tony Mitchell provided the US's rebounding power with a team-high seven boards. He also added four points and a pair of blocks. Jeremy Lamb (UConn) led all American scorers with 21 points.

The Americans led 53-52 heading into the fourth quarter, but 43.3 percent shooting and an 0-of-9 mark from 3-point doomed the US. Russia's Vladislav Trushkin poured in 14 points in the fourth quarter alone to eliminate the defending World Champions.

For the tournament, Mitchell led the US with 7.9 rebounds (55 total) and 1.7 blocks (12 total) per game. The former Dallas Pinkston standout also hauled in 5.9 points on 53.3 percent shooting, to go with six steals, five assists and just four turnovers.
