JUCO Transfer Marqus Mitchell Signs With Mean Green

DENTON (3/16/03) -- The North Texas men's basketball team signed State Fair (Mo.) Community College transfer Marqus Mitchell to a national letter of intent on Wednesday.

Mitchell, a 6-0, 185-pound guard, spent the last two seasons at State Fair CC, where he earned first-team All-Region XVI honors as both a freshman and sophomore.

"Not only is Marqus an outstanding person, he is an explosive athlete that is good in the open floor and when he gets on a roll can score in bunches," said State Fair assistant coach Derek Witt. "Last year he was a tremendous scoring threat and this season, while he was still a scoring threat, settled in to more of a point-guard role. So he can score or run an offense."

The Baton Rouge, La., native averaged 13 points, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game as a sophomore last season. He connected on 55 percent of his shots, including a 40-percent mark from behind the arc. As a freshman, Mitchell averaged 16.5 points per game.

"Marqus will be a great asset to North Texas," said Mitchell's AAU coach Pat Green. "He is a good person that is a natural leader. He can do a lot of things on the court and is a well-rounded basketball player."

"Marqus will bring an added ingredient to our team that we didn't possess last year with his ability as a true combo guard," said North Texas head coach Johnny Jones. "We are excited to have him joining our Mean Green basketball family and we think he will fill a huge void that was left by our graduating seniors."
