Mitchell Earns Back-To-Back Sun Belt Honors

DENTON, Texas - North Texas freshman Tony Mitchell was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon. Mitchell led the Mean Green to a 2-0 record last week while averaging 18.0 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game.

Mitchell followed up his Player of the Week nod last week with a pair of stellar games. The freshman poured in 21 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Western Kentucky and followed it with 15 points and nine boards in a win at Louisiana-Monroe.

The league’s shooting percentage leader was 13-of-19 (68.4) from the floor and 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from beyond the arc for the week. Mitchell continued to dominate the paint with five blocks and three steals on the week.

The Dallas, Texas native leads the SBC in field-goal percentage (68.8) rebounding per game (9.5), three-point percentage (76.9) and is fourth in blocks per game (2.5) and 5th in scoring (15.2).

With this week's Player of the Week honor, Mitchell becomes the first back-to-back winner and the first two-time winner this season. The freshman joins Tristan Thompson, Collin Dennis and Josh White as the only NT players to win multiple Sun Belt Player of the Week awards in the same season.

Mitchell and the Mean Green will be in action on Wednesday at Noon for Youth Appreciation Day when North Texas takes on Huston-Tillotson at the Super Pit. For tickets, call the Mean Green Ticket Office at (940) 565-2527.
