McCoy Sparks Mean Green Hoops Past Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. (2/26/09) Adam McCoy and the North Texas 3-ball barrage was simply too much for Arkansas State in a 91-82 win on Thursday night at the Convocation Center.

The Senior-Day lineup was a definite spark for the Red Wolves (13-15, 5-12 Sun Belt West) out of the gate, but McCoy and the Mean Green (17-11, 10-7 Sun Belt West) just couldn’t miss in a red-hot first half. The senior scored 13 of his career-high 29 points in a 2:50 span of the first half to send NT into the break with a 49-29 advantage.

The Dallas native sparked a 3-point pileup that saw the Mean Green knock down 6-of-9 overall from deep in the opening frame, and 7-of-14 overall. McCoy was 10-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-8 from deep in his fourth straight game with at least 15 points.

Sunday’s game at Denver takes on a little more importance with wins by the Mean Green and Pioneers (14-14, 9-8 Sun Belt West) on Thursday. North Texas is now locked into a three-way tie for the fourth seed in the Sun Belt Tournament and DU sits just a game back in the seventh seed, eager to pounce in the mile-high altitude.

North Texas bounced back in a big way following a 25.5 percent shooting performance against UALR on Saturday night. Dominique Johnson guided the ship with 14 points and six assists, and Josh White wasn’t far behind with 13 points.

Eric Tramiel proved un-guardable out of the gate as NT went to the paint early. The junior slammed home dunks on two of his first three buckets in the games’ first six minutes, and ended the night with nine points.

The Mean Green wraps up the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Denver. Action from Magness Arena tips off at 2 p.m. Central.
