Mean Green Holds Off South Alabama 82-79

DENTON, Texas - North Texas basketball snapped its four game losing streak when it held on late to take down the South Alabama Jaguars 82-79 Thursday night at the Super Pit.

Four members of the Mean Green (17-8, 6-6) scored in double figures, with senior Tristan Thompson leading the way with 18 points and six rebounds. The double digit scoring effort was Thompson's 22nd of the season.

Trailing by as many as eight to South Alabama (10-14, 4-9), North Texas turned it around in the second half, outscoring the Jaguars by eight in the final frame, 48-40.

The Mean Green forced 12 turnovers and outscored the Jaguars 40-28 in the paint.

With the game on the line late, North Texas got to the free throw line and showed why it is among one of the best free-throw shooting teams in the Sun Belt Conference, converting 77.8 percent of its 27 shots from the charity stripe.

The Jaguars, who shot 57 percent from the floor and hit 5-of-12 shots from behind the arch, wouldn't give up as they took a six point North Texas lead with 23 seconds left and narrowed it to three on two different occasions before time ran out.  

Augustine Rubit led the way for USA as he tallying 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Senior George Odufuwa collected yet another double-double, his 12th of the season, recording 10 rebounds to go with his 12 points.

The Mean Green will be back in action on Saturday when it plays host to the Warhawks of Louisiana-Monroe at 7 p.m. from the Super Pit. North Texas defeated ULM 79-62 on January 20.
