DENTON -- North Texas basketball coach Tony Benford signed first-team All-Region XIV scoring guard Deckie Johnson to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.

An attacking 6-4 guard, Johnson led Angelina College and ranked 41stin the country with 18.7 points per game, including a clip of 20.2 points in league play, as a sophomore last season. His 164 made free throws ranked 19thin the nation, and he hit 75.6 percent from the stripe.

In two seasons, Johnson scored over 1,000 points at Angelina College.

"We couldn't be more excited to have Deckie join the North Texas family," Benford said. "He's a winner, he's been well coached, and he'll be ready to step in and contribute for us from day one. I believe that because, first off, Deckie is an explosive guard that has a tremendous ability to score from anywhere on the court. Secondly, he has a mindset of toughness on the defensive end of the floor. I think he's just a great all-around guard that has a chance to be one of the best in C-USA next season."

Johnson posted 14 games of at least 20 points, including a season-high 33 points on 13-of-17 shooting at Blinn College. He also tallied 31 points in a win against Paris Junior College.

Not just a scorer, the sophomore piled up five double-doubles in 2014-15 -- three with points and rebounds and two with points and assists.

"When you combine Deckie with the other guards we are adding to our roster this year, Ja'Michael Brown and J'Mychal Reece, all of them are really good athletes that can create their own shots and create shots for their teammates," Benford said. "They will make us better perimeter defenders and make us a smarter basketball team on the offensive end."

Johnson racked up 5.7 assists per game, which ranked 31stnationwide, and his 1.9 assist/turnover ratio was among the nation's top 200 players. He also pulled down 5.0 rebounds per game, including 2.2 per game on the offensive glass.

Johnson led Angelina in scoring as a freshman with 15.1 points on 44.9 percent shooting, and was a Second Team All-Region XIV selection. One of his league's top 3-point shooters, Johnson hit 33.6 percent from deep as a freshman.

That year he was also a 79.3 percent free throw shooter, and averaged 3.2 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.

At Southwind High School in Memphis, Tenn., Johnson helped lead the Jaguars to their first state championship in Tennessee's largest classification (AAA) as a senior in 2013. His Southwind squad went 34-6, and Johnson was named to the Memphis Commercial Appeal's Pepsi Best of the Preps team.
