DENTON, Texas – Coming off the biggest road win of the Tony Benford era, the North Texas basketball team will try to keep its momentum going into its final non-conference game of the year against UC Riverside on Saturday afternoon.
On New Year’s eve, the Mean Green dominated Texas A&M, 61-41. It was the Mean Green’s first win in College Station since 1966, and the Aggies lowest point total ever at Reed Arena - a venue that Texas A&M is 116-12 (.906) against non-conference opponents.
North Texas held TAMU to 30.0 percent shooting, which is the best field goal percentage defense on the road since it held New Orleans to 23.0 percent on Feb. 11, 2010.
In a strange coincidence, Alzee Williams recorded his 900th career point, Jordan Williams tallied his 800th career point and Chris Jones reached the 200 assist plateau in the win over Texas A&M.
UC Riverside is among the Big West Conference’s best defensive squads. The Highlanders ranks second in the Big West in steals per game at 7.5, and are holding their opponents to 65.8 points per game, which ranks third in the league.
The Highlanders were tabbed to finish last in the nine-team Big West Conference in the preseason media poll. The Highlanders are coming off a 6-25 season, including a 3-15 mark in Big West play in 2012-13.
UCR downed Waldorf, 85-43, on Thursday night thanks to 51.6 percent shooting.
