On-Campus Support Services
In keeping with UNT's strong commitment to international education and its institutional partners abroad, the Study Abroad Office provides specialized assistance to all international exchange students.
Exchange students receive a special Orientation program which includes personalized settling-in assistance, academic advising, and counseling.
Please contact the office at 940-565-2207 or email studyabroad@unt.edu if you do not find the materials you need to prepare you as you come to UNT. Please remember that we will also email you very detailed and specific information as the time of your arrival gets close.

Students are advised to get airline reservations far in advance to avoid difficulties. We especially recommend direct flights from the home country to Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW), as there are fewer problems with delays, etc. For British students, direct flights are available from London/Gatwick, but good connections through Chicago are also available from Glasgow and Manchester. French students may wish to fly directly from Paris. German students can fly directly from Frankfurt. Japanese students can come direct from Tokyo.

We do recommend that students avoid flights that go through New York City/JFK International before coming to Dallas, due to frequent delays and problems.

We will place specific information in the on-line system with arrival information for each term. It is your responsibility to ensure you review these materials.

Students should create shuttle reservations with Super Shuttle to transport them from DFW to UNT's campus in Denton. The reservation can be made at http://www.supershuttle.com. Super Shuttle offers discounted UNT student rate. You must use the group code for UNT: 3UPCM in order to receive the following rates: (Note: rates are subject to change depending on ridership and fuel prices) From DFW Int'l Airport- $49.00 one way or $96.00 round-trip (additional guests are $10.00 each). Taxi fare from D/FW is about $50-$70!!

Personalized Assistance Settling-In

Study Abroad assists the exchange student in acquiring a bank account, UNT identification card, post office box, Social Security card (if necessary), long-distance telephone credit card, and work permission on the UNT campus. Shopping trips are arranged during the Orientation Program to obtain groceries and other living items.

Study Abroad encourages students to obtain a post office box to obtain their mail while studying at UNT. A student is telephoned whenever a faxed message arrives.

The Director and staff maintain contact with the home institution to ensure that the needs of the institution and the student are being met. Study Abroad welcomes telephone calls, faxed letters, email messages, and personal visits to the campus by home-institution faculty and administrators.

The exact day for Incoming Exchange Orientation is different for each term; students will be notified of this day in their acceptance packet. During this Orientation, take you shopping, help you open a bank account, get a long-distance telephone card, a post office box (about $45 per semester; a post office box is mandatory for all students living in the dorm), and a student ID card. We will also help you complete your registration for classes and sort out any problems that may have occurred during enrollment prior to the semester. This orientation is very important for all exchange students!

You are welcome to choose courses from the UNT catalog and the appropriate semester's Schedule of Classes, available at the exchange/study abroad office at your university and on the UNT Schedule of Classes webpage. Students usually take 12-15 credit hours per semester. Enrollment in a minimum of 12 hours (usually four classes per semester) is a visa requirement. Most classes are 3-credit, although some areas of study have 1, 2, or 4-credit classes. You should email the UNT Study Abroad Exchange advisor (contact information is with your home university's exchange advisor) a list of UNT classes selected in conjunction with your home institution academic advisor for the semesters which you plan to attend; we will attempt to place you in each of the classes you request. Please note that RTVF/Media Arts, Journalism and Art Studio classes are generally not available for exchange students.

The Study Abroad Office will set up advising sessions with the various department advisors for all in-coming exchange students and register you for classes from our office. Your grades will be reported to our office and then forwarded to your home university. We will provide detailed information to you via email, our on-line system, and during Orientation in Denton. Additional information on other parts of the process will be uploaded into this section as we approach your arrival time to prepare you to come to UNT.
Textbooks and Study Materials Cost

UNT estimates that an average student spends approximately $800 on textbooks and study materials each academic year. Although some textbooks are in the library, most must be purchased. Used textbooks are available for purchase at the University Bookstore, but they tend to sell out rather quickly. Textbooks can be sold back to the bookstores for a percentage of the price paid. In addition, some textbooks may be rented through the on-campus bookstore, allowing students to use the textbooks for the duration of the semester at a reduced cost.
Academic Advising and Personal Counseling

The Exchange Coordinators personally advise exchange students during his or her stay at UNT. This advisement includes general academic requirements and routine, course selection and placement, textbook purchase, computer and electronic mail access, visa status, campus employment, etc.

Each student also meets with an academic advisor in the major department. If a question arises as to the selection of courses, the student is assisted in contacting the home department to decide appropriate courses.

At the end of each semester, the Exchange Coordinators collect and record the course grades, and reports them both to the home institution and the student. The final grade report is the formal report of the student's academic efforts and results.
