For Parents & Families
Studying abroad is a rewarding opportunity and we hope you will encourage your student to participate in one of our exciting programs. Choosing to study abroad is one of the best decisions a student can make for their personal and academic development. By participating in study abroad, students gain knowledge and experience that can't be taught in the classroom. This is a chance for your student to grow as an individual and to obtain a unique understanding of the world and its abundant array of cultures.
Parents and families play a significant role in the study abroad process. We want every student's study abroad endeavor to be both educationally and personally rewarding; we do everything we can to meet these expectations, but your participation is invaluable. Please talk with your student about study abroad.
The Parent/Family's Role in Study Abroad
Parents form an integral part of the study abroad experience by supporting their student's choice to embark on this academic and life-enriching endeavor. Here are some specific ways to show support and be involved in the process:
-
Make sure your student's visa paperwork is in order.
-
Assist with flight arrangements.
-
Develop a plan for handling family emergencies that may arise while your student is abroad.
Besides reading through our website in its entirety, ask your student to review his or her Pre-Departure handbook and other materials which are available to them via our on-line system. While UNT cannot grant you access, many of the items can be printed out by students, so be sure you stay up-to-date with your student and the process.
