The old adage “April showers bring May flowers” might have been uttered too soon as Denton County was pelted with floods this spring. But the flora that survived the rain could help one UNT graduate student get her master’s degree.

Andrea Cloutier is researching the personal urban gardening practices of many Denton residents as she completes her thesis in UNT’s geography department. Members of the Elm Fork Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists will hear a presentation on conservation of North Texas bumblebees today at the Denton County Elections Building, 701 Kimberly Drive.

A social time is planned at 9 a.m. and the meeting will start at 9:30 a.m.

Guest speaker will be Jessica Beckham, a Ph.D. candidate in environmental science at the University of North Texas.

The city of Frisco will hold a free brown-bag workshop on native pollinators from noon to 1 p.m. July 24.

Jessica Beckham, a doctoral candidate in environmental science at the University of North Texas, will talk about the history of bumblebees, identification of common species in North Texas, and ways to conserve and protect them.

The workshop will be held at the Frisco Department of Public Works Training Room, 11300 Research Road. Registration is requested. Learn more at friscotexas.gov.

Despite national decline, bumblebees thrive in county

Although certain species of bumblebees are declining in some parts of the nation, a researcher from the University of North Texas said bumblebee populations in Denton County remain strong.

Jessica Beckham, a doctoral student, conducted field work at gardens across the county, sampling 450 bees, all belonging to two species that are declining nationwide.

“They’re both doing pretty well here, and the proportions are almost exactly the same as historical data, so that’s a good sign,” Beckham said.

The results of her study are being finalized before she publishes the research.

University of North Texas doctoral student Michael Jones will meet and network with Nobel Prize winners during the 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, which will bring together laureates in physiology, medicine, physics and chemistry.

 

Thousands of young scientists apply to attend the event each year. Jones is one of 672 attendees from 88 countries who will participate in this year's event, which takes place from June 28--July 3 in Germany.
