Father’s Day in the skies

Denton Air Fair Inc. is fueling up the engines for a Father’s Day weekend up in the air.

On Saturday, the 2015 Denton Airshow will present pilots and aircraft from around the country in a celebration of aviation at Denton Enterprise Airport, with all proceeds benefiting Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home.

“It’s a living history lesson,” said Amanda Addington, marketing director for Denton Air Fair. “What you’re getting here is not something that is focused on or taught in schools anymore. This is better than a textbook.”

Softball honors show area talent

Lauren Craine wasn't quite perfect this season, but it would be a challenge to find another high school pitcher in Texas who's better.

Craine and fellow recent Aledo High School graduate Allie Arneson were named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 5A All-State Team. They led the Ladycats to a second consecutive state championship.

 

Craine posted a 22-1 record this season. She accounted for almost every one of the Ladycats' (23-1) victories. Over her career, Craine posted a 77-5 record.

Arneson, who was also the District 8-5A Most Valuable Player, batted .600.

Piano Guild auditions held

Piano Guild auditions, sponsored by the National Guild of Piano Teachers, were held recently on the campus of The University of Texas at Tyler.

Judging during the four days of auditions was Mary Hurst Rozanski, of North Richland Hills. Mrs. Rozanski holds music degrees from Baylor University and The University of North Texas. She has been a guild judge since 1984, is a former instructor at Tarrant County College and maintains a private piano studio in North Richland Hills.

Need a lift? DCTA offering $30 summer youth passes

The Denton County Transportation Authority is offering a $30 youth pass that can be used throughout the summer.

The pass provides riders ages 5 to 18 unlimited access to Connect buses in Denton and Lewisville, Connect RSVP, the UNT Shuttle and the A-train through Aug. 31.

Passengers 14 to 18 years old must have a valid high school or DCTA-issued ID.

Youth passes can be purchased at DCTA’s Downtown Denton Transit Center, at the Lewisville and Highland Village city halls, and online at RideDCTA.net.

Lambda Legal Sues To Force Texas Officials To Comply With Upcoming SCOTUS Marriage Ruling

Lambda Legal has launched a pre-emptive strike against Texas officials who want to defy a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage. 

The group filed a lawsuit Thursday on behalf of a lesbian state employee against the Employee Retirement System of Texas, seeking equal benefits for same-sex spouses.
