Keith Jerden, 74, ex-Grand Prairie teacher, principal

Keith Evans Jerden was born into a family of teachers, a tradition he carried on for 40 years in the Grand Prairie schools. He was a teacher, coach and principal, with a passion for his students and faculties.

Jerden, 74, died July 17 at his Grand Prairie home of a rare form of liver cancer.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Laurel Land Funeral Home in Dallas.

“He was one of those people who could bring out the best,” said his wife, Marilyn Jerden of Grand Prairie. “Every time he got moved, he was sent in to clean up. He just had the best ability to win his faculty over.”

Texas sculptor and National Medal of the Arts recipient Jesus Moroles   has died in a traffic accident.    The Texas Department of Public Safety says Moroles was killed Monday night in a wreck in Jarrell, 30 miles north of Austin.    DPS said Wednesday that Moroles was northbound on Interstate 35 when the van he was driving rear-ended a tractor-trailer rig. Moroles, who lived and worked in Rockport, died at the scene. The trucker wasn't hurt.    President George W. Bush in 2008 awarded Moroles, who specialized in granite, the National Medal of Arts in a White House ceremony.

Kamerick, former UNT president, dies at 95 in Fla.

John J. Kamerick was president of the University of North Texas for just two years, but he made those years count.

Kamerick, who served at what was then North Texas State University from 1968 to 1970, died April 13 at age 95 in Sarasota, Florida.

When he led the university in Denton, Kamerick pressed for historic reforms. He recruited faculty and students in writing academic and campus policies — moves that made way for a faculty senate and political speakers’ visits to campus.

Kamerick’s leadership finally allowed students to establish a chapter of civil rights organization the NAACP.
