UNT will face Marshall on Saturday, when the Mean Green will try to snap a six-game slide to open the season in its second game under interim coach Mike Canales. Here are five things UNT fans should know about the Thundering Herd.

1. The loss of Rakeem Cato hasn’t hampered the Herd

The big question for Marshall heading into the season was how it would do without record-setting quarterback Rakeem Cato. Losing a top quarterback is never easy. Just look at UNT’s fortunes since Derek Thompson graduated. Marshall is still averaging 31.9 points a game, and that is after changing quarterbacks in the...

North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal and several other key members of school’s administration are just beginning their search for a new football coach.

But that doesn’t mean the school hasn’t made some headway.

Villarreal said late last week the school already has a good idea of what it is looking for when it comes to the coach who will step in for Dan McCarney. UNT fired its former head coach following a loss to Portland State on Oct. 10.

Coach Dan McCarney was relieved of his duties as the North Texas head coach after the past weekend. With McCarney out, North Texas will be looking to find someone that can turn around a program struggling to get back to where it was in 2013. Back then, the Mean Green went on the road to face Western Kentucky and pulled through with a 33-6 win.

UNT will look for a repeat tonight — once again against WKU.

That is where the similarities end when it comes to the situation UNT faced five years...

UNT extended its winning streak to four games last week and moved into first place in the C-USA standings, a run that set up a huge game for the Mean Green on Friday.

UNT (12-2-1, 4-0-1 C-USA) has a C-USA-best 13 points, putting the Mean Green one point ahead of Rice, Florida International and Middle Tennessee. The Mean Green will face the Blue Raiders on Friday at the Mean Green Soccer Stadium.

“It will be a big game,” UNT coach John Hedlund said. “Hopefully we will have a lot of fans at this game and can continue our winning streak. This is the best we have played defensively all year. We feel...
