Football: UNT finds progress in spring

One of the more challenging springs for the North Texas football team came to an end last week with the Mean Green’s annual spring game.

UNT installed a new spread offense and a revamped defense that will use a base 3-3-5 alignment, adjusted to a new coaching staff and moved a little closer toward selecting a new starting quarterback.

DENTON -- Lee High School grad and former University of North Texas football standout Andy Brewster is going to be inducted into the University of North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame.

The induction takes place today during an 11 a.m. luncheon at UNT’s Apogee Stadium and it will be held before the annual football spring game, which begins at 2 p.m. Brewster, the starting center of two Class 5A state championship teams at Lee in 1998 and 1999, will be one of nine inductees.

Since being a high school senior at Notre Dame who had to make his own highlight tapes to send college coaches, Scott Bowles has done quite well for himself.

He ended up with a college scholarship, was a four-year all-conference starter and ended up spending a couple of years in the NFL.

He will be honored for a second time by the University of North Texas when he will be one of six inducted into the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday.

Bowles, who played tackle for the Eagles from 1987-90, was previously selected as a member of North Texas' All-Century Football Team.

Mark Beaty has remained in close contact with his former North Texas teammates over the years through email and the occasional phone call.

Only when there is something truly special going on does he get a chance to meet up in person with guys like Jordan Case and David Hagerman.

Sunday night’s National Football Foundation banquet qualified for one simple reason. It gave all of those old-time UNT football standouts an opportunity to hear a little more about what lies ahead for the Mean Green under new coach Seth Littrell.

One of the key questions for North Texas heading into head coach Seth Littrell’s first season is how the move to a wide-open passing offense will go.

UNT has been known as a run-first team for years. The Mean Green enjoyed great success with that approach during its best seasons in over the last 15 years, including a four-year run as Sun Belt Conference champions from 2001-04 and in 2013, when UNT beat UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The problem was that approach has gone out of style on the college level and on the high school scene in Texas, where the spread is modus operandi these days....
