Noise that technically qualifies as music booms from the open doorway of the mid-sized Denton tavern and venue known as “Rockin' Rodeo." Heavy bombardments of dad-rock and Jazz-infused synth-pop all but drown out the respective conversations of the 40+ patrons waiting in line outside. Past the building's hideous diarrhea-brown brick exterior, through the double doors leading to the big dome-shaped room that's quickly filling up with audience members, a surprisingly successful benefit concert unfolds.

White Cane Day event set for Wednesday

At the lunch hour Wednesday, people will walk around the Denton Square in solidarity with the blind and visually impaired for White Cane Day.

Organizers for the free walk said it’s being done to raise awareness about employment and mobility-related barriers faced by people with disabilities.

Participants in Denton’s fifth annual walk will meet at noon at the University of North Texas on the Square gallery on the corner of North Elm Street and West Hickory Street.

They plan to walk a block to the Denton Courthouse on the Square with personal and borrowed white canes.

UNT's Greek Life Center - One of the First of its Kind - Offers Space for Sororities, Fraternities, Entire University Community

DENTON, Texas (UNT) – UNT's newest facility serves the university community and gives members of all 39 fraternities and sororities a place to call home on Greek Row.

The 6,000-square-foot stand-alone Greek Life Center, one of the first of its kind in the country, opened this spring. This fall it begins offering tutoring and other programs for all UNT students through partner organizations such as UNT's Learning Center and Career Center.

Weekly tutoring at the center began Sept. 2, while other programs begin in early October.

Church won’t be silent on HIV

A local church will make free HIV testing available during an afternoon program designed to boost understanding and awareness of the virus that can destroy a person’s immune system, making them vulnerable to deadly infections.

About 80 people came out for a similar event last year, according to Mary Taylor, spokeswoman for St. James AME Church. The church is partnering with the Denton County Health Department and the local chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, at the University of North Texas, and other community groups to host this year’s event from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 20.
