Unusual behavior may signal new uses for steel

Engineering professor Srinivasan Srivilliputhur and a University of Wisconsin collaborator discovered a new behavior in steel, which could help industry to develop stronger materials. The findings were recently published in the journal "Nature."

Visiting professor Srikumar Banerjee will speak at 3 p.m. March 22 at Discovery Park, Room B185. A reception follows at 4 p.m. Banerjee is former chair of the Atomic Energy Commission of India and is Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir.

Engineering adds second National Academy of Engineering member to faculty

Jim Williams, a world-renowned researcher and professor, has joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He was previously dean at Ohio State University and Carnegie Mellon University, and has worked with Boeing, Rockwell and GE.
